Optimize Declining Content
Content decay is inevitable. Here's how to detect and fix it.
What Is Content Decay?
Content decay occurs when a page's organic traffic gradually decreases over time. Common causes:
- Content becomes outdated
- Competitors publish better alternatives
- Search intent evolves
- Algorithm updates change ranking factors
Detecting Decay in StratGen
- Go to Predictions > Content Decay
- The Decay Intelligence engine scans all published content
- Pages are flagged with decay scores:
- Green: Stable or growing
- Yellow: Early signs of decline
- Red: Significant traffic loss
Diagnosing the Cause
For each declining page, check:
- Position changes: Has the ranking dropped?
- SERP changes: New competitors or SERP features?
- Content freshness: When was it last updated?
- Search intent shift: Has what users want changed?
Refreshing Content
- Update facts and figures: Replace outdated data
- Expand coverage: Add new sections, FAQs, examples
- Improve structure: Better headings, table of contents, visuals
- Refresh meta tags: Update title and description
- Add internal links: Link from newer content
- Update the date: Show search engines the content is fresh
Prevention
- Schedule quarterly content reviews
- Set up decay alerts for high-traffic pages
- Build evergreen content that ages well
Goal: Refresh your top 10 pages every 3-6 months to maintain rankings.
